Volkswagen Tyres: What to Check
Volkswagen uses a wide spread of wheel sizes, even within one model. A Golf on 16 inch wheels and a Golf R on 19s need completely different tyres, so we go by what's printed on your sidewall rather than the model name.
Many recent Volkswagens come with a tyre inflation kit instead of a spare wheel. If a tyre is badly damaged the kit won't help, so stop somewhere safe and call us rather than driving on it.
ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5
Electric models are heavier than a petrol Golf, so the replacement tyre must carry at least the original load rating.
GTI and R Models
Larger, lower-profile tyres with higher speed ratings. Tell us the exact size so we bring the right one.
VW Vans

Tyre Notes for Volkswagen
Most Volkswagen Golf, Polo, Passat and T-Roc models use standard tyres, commonly 16 to 18 inch, with GTI, R and R-Line versions on 18 to 19 inch. Electric ID models are heavier and usually need XL (extra load) tyres, so the load index is important.
Many Volkswagens come with a tyre repair kit instead of a spare wheel. A repair kit can get you moving after a small puncture, but it cannot fix sidewall damage, and once sealant has been used the tyre needs checking. If you have used a kit, tell us when you call.
Volkswagen vans such as the Transporter and Crafter need commercial (C) or reinforced tyres with the correct load rating. Locking wheel bolts are fitted on many cars, so check for the key. Volkswagen tyre pressure monitoring often needs resetting through the car's menu after new tyres are fitted.
Golf R and Tiguan 4MOTION models are four-wheel drive, so uneven tread between front and rear tyres should be avoided.
The UK legal minimum tread for cars is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, all the way round. If your VW has a space-saver fitted, keep to its speed limit, usually 50 mph.
Fitments vary by model, year and trim, so always check the size, load index and any approval marking on your current tyre, or in the Volkswagen handbook.
