Tyre Notes for Tesla

Teslas are heavy cars because of the battery, so they need tyres with the right load rating. Most Model 3 and Model Y fitments use XL (extra load) or HL (high load) tyres, and fitting a tyre with a lower load index is not safe. Tesla often specifies tyres with a T0 marking and a foam liner inside to cut road noise. A non-foam tyre will fit and work, but the car may sound a little louder.

Teslas do not come with a spare wheel. Common sizes are 18 to 21 inch, and Model 3 Performance and some Model Y versions use staggered sizes with wider rear tyres. Electric cars deliver instant torque, which tends to wear the tyres faster than drivers expect, so check the tread depth on all four regularly.

Tesla wheels need jacking at the correct lift points under the battery, often with a protective jack pad, and we follow that to avoid damage. Some Teslas have aero wheel covers to remove first. Locking nuts are uncommon but do appear on some cars. Tyre pressure monitoring usually updates itself after a short drive, and can be checked on the screen.

Fitments vary by model, year and trim, so always check the size, load index and any approval marking on your current tyre, or in the Tesla handbook.
