What to do after an accident
Safety always comes first. Switch your hazard lights on, turn the engine off and, if it is safe, get everyone out of the car and away from traffic. On a motorway or dual carriageway, leave by the left-hand doors, get behind the barrier and stay there. If anyone is injured, the road is blocked, or you cannot get out safely, call 999 before anything else. Do not stand between vehicles or in a live lane.
If another vehicle was involved, swap names, addresses, phone numbers, registration numbers and insurance details with the other driver. Take photos of the vehicles, the road and any damage, if it is safe to do so. You must report the accident to the police within 24 hours if anyone was hurt or if you could not exchange details at the scene.
When you call us, tell us the exact location: the road, the direction you were travelling and the nearest junction, marker post or landmark. You can also tap Send My Location so we have your exact position. Tell us the make and model, whether the car still rolls and steers, whether any wheels or tyres are damaged, and where you would like the car taken.
Not every accident means the car needs moving. A hard knock against a kerb or a pothole can destroy a tyre or bend a wheel while the rest of the car is fine. If the only damage is to a tyre, we may be able to fit a new one where the car is, so you can drive on. We check the wheel and the steering feel before we say it is safe. If it is not, we tell you so honestly.
If the car cannot be driven, we can recover it by winching it onto a low-loader and taking it to a garage, your home or another place you choose. We confirm the destination and the total price on the call before we set off. That way there are no surprises. We aim to arrive within 30 minutes, depending on location, traffic and technician availability. That is a target, not a guarantee.
We do not work in live lanes. If the car is stranded on a smart motorway or a busy stretch of the M4, M25 or M40, the police or National Highways may need to make the road safe first. Once they have, or the car has been moved to a safe place, we can help.
