How roadside diagnostics work
Safety first. If the car loses power or a red warning light comes on while you are driving, pull over where it is safe and legal, switch on your hazard lights and turn the engine off. On a motorway or dual carriageway, get to the hard shoulder or an emergency area if you can, leave by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. If you are stuck in a live lane, call 999 first. We do not work in live lanes.
Most modern cars store a fault code when something goes wrong. We plug a diagnostic scanner into the car's diagnostic socket, read the stored codes and look at what the car is reporting. A code points to the system that has a problem, such as the engine management, a sensor, the battery and charging system, or the brakes. It does not always say which part has failed, so we explain what the code means and how sure we can be.
Common reasons drivers call us include an engine management light, a car that will not start or turns over slowly, loss of power or limp mode, rough running or misfiring, battery and charging warnings, and ABS or airbag lights. If a red warning light is on, such as oil pressure or engine temperature, do not keep driving. Tell us what you can see when you call.
When you contact us, tell us where the car is, the make, model and year, which lights are on, and what happened just before the fault appeared. If the car is in a car park, tell us the level and how we get in. Work in private car parks depends on the owner's permission and safe space round the car. You can also tap Send My Location so we have your exact position.
After the check, we give you clear, honest advice. Sometimes the fix is simple, such as a flat battery that needs a jump start. Sometimes the car is safe to drive gently to a garage, and sometimes it is not. We never guess, and we will not tell you a car is safe if we are not sure. We confirm the total price on the call before we set off, and you can pay by card or cash.
We aim to arrive within 30 minutes, depending on location, traffic and technician availability. That is a target, not a guarantee. If the problem turns out to be a tyre, we carry popular sizes on the van. These pages may also help:

Frequently asked questions
Can you tell me what a warning light means?
Usually, yes. We read the fault codes the car has stored and explain what they point to. A code shows which system has a problem, not always which part has failed.
Is my car safe to drive with the engine light on?
It depends on the fault. A flashing engine light or any red warning light means stop where it is safe. We check the codes and tell you honestly.
Do you repair the fault as well?
We give you clear advice on the next step. If it is a flat battery or a tyre, we can usually sort it there. For other faults we will tell you if you need a garage.
Can you come to me on the motorway?
We do not work in live lanes. Get to the hard shoulder or an emergency area if you can, and call 999 if you are in a live lane. Once you are safe, call us.
How quickly can you get to me?
We aim to arrive within 30 minutes. That is a target, not a guarantee, and it depends on where you are, traffic and technician availability.
