What to do when you run out of fuel
Safety comes first. Switch your hazard lights on as soon as the car starts to lose power and, if you can, coast it to the side of the road, a lay-by or a car park. On a motorway or dual carriageway, leave by the left-hand doors if it is safe, get behind the barrier and stay well away from the traffic. If you are stopped in a live lane and cannot get out safely, keep your seatbelt on and call 999 straight away.
When you contact us, tap Send My Location so we have your exact position, or describe it: the road, the direction you were travelling and the nearest junction, marker post or landmark. Tell us whether the car takes petrol or diesel, and the make and model. If you are in a car park, let us know the level and how to get in.
We bring fuel in approved containers and put enough in your tank to get you safely to the nearest fuel station, where you can fill up properly. We confirm availability and the price on the call before we set off. We aim to arrive within 30 minutes, depending on location, traffic and technician availability. That is a target, not a guarantee.
On smart motorways and busy stretches of the M4, M25 and M40, aim for an emergency area or the hard shoulder if one is open, and do not walk along the carriageway. If you cannot get off the road, call 999 first. We do not work in live lanes; once the road is safe, or the car has been moved, we can bring fuel to you.
